Many utility companies offer a program call “net metering” to help incentivize homeowners to add solar self-production to their homes. Simply put, net metering is the resultant balance between the energy your home produces compared to the energy your home consumes. In the simplest example, if you consume 2000 kW and your solar system generates 2000 kW, the net difference would be zero.
Does Net Zero Mean Energy is Free?
Not necessarily. Your home’s solar production will be during daylight hours. Over night, you utilize the utility company’s energy or battery power stored from excess solar generation during the day. This energy will be billed per the utility company costs during those hours. The goal for the solar home is produce an excess of energy during the day sufficient to credit your overnight energy needs. This excess production is sent back up the grid for energy credit – You Sell Energy Back to the Utility Company! Some Utility companies offer NET zero metering so that you can create energy sufficient to having a $0 bill from the utility company each month. Others allow for overage so that you can receive credit monthly, and in some case annually, on you excess energy production.
APS of Arizona allow up to 125% of your needs so that an APS customer not only may receive a negative invoice from APS each month, but the monthly credits roll-over to accumulate for a rebate check from APS each year!
Abundant, Free Energy…
Net Metering is an awesome way to replace the energy you purchase from the monopoly utility company with fixed cost energy from your roof. The sun rays are abundant and solar energy is tax-free. There is no delivery or line charges as it goes directly from your roof to your electric panel. But is it free? Yes & no! The sun’s powerful rays are absolutely free. However the solar system will cost money.
- If you pay cash for your solar system, the resultant energy will be essentially no charge. And, in the case of net metering, will likely make money every year in the form of a rebate.
- If you purchase with financing, you will have a fixed monthly cost until the system is paid off – after which, the energy produced will be no charge. When financed, we offer no money down installation so that you do not receive your first installment until the system is actually producing energy AND we engineer the system to best benefit the total energy cost for your utility company plans so that your monthly energy is lower than utility company alone.
NOTE: A benefit of financing your solar system is that you pay only for what you need. The loan is transferrable to the home-buyer when you sell so that your obligation is complete. AND, several reports indicate that solar homes are worth up to 4% more than non-solar homes!
